Overview

The American Revolution is guide Number 3 of the 24 SparkNotes guides for studying American History. It discusses the events of war years of 1775–1783, but also describes occurrences in the lead up to the war starting in 1754. This study guide is preceded by our guide for Pre-Revolutionary America and followed by our guide for The Declaration of Independence.

The American Revolution, the war that would define the character of the American nation, was fought in a series of skirmishes and battles over the course of the late 1770s and early 1780s. However, it occurred in the context of an earlier war against the French followed by a dozen or so years of increasingly bellicose and sometimes violent disagreements and clashes between the American colonists and their British overlords. Understanding the Revolutionary War and the nation that sprang from it requires an awareness of these events.
